Albarella: Sustainability
Choosing a holiday on Albarella Island is not only about living an experience immersed in the splendid nature of the Po Delta, but also of a concrete action to protect and safeguard the environment that surrounds it. There are many projects that the Island is involved in to create an increasingly green future, promoting ethical behaviour amongst guests, but also investing in specific projects regarding recycling and the reduction of Co2 emissions.
THE “IMMERSED IN NATURE” PROJECT
Albarella Island has been developing the “Immersed in nature” project designed by the Coloco atelier in Paris since 2017, it includes a series of interventions to redevelop the natural and environmental heritage of the Island, through a contemporary idea of the landscape and a fresh urban vision. “Immersed in nature” is first and foremost a biological enrichment project aimed at starting a new ecological dynamic, a garden in motion. Over 1,800 trees and over 13,000 perennials have already been planted. Part of this project saw the creation of the eco-sustainable adventure playground Albarella Land. The nature art installations housed in the green areas of the Island by the artists of Officina di Due and the internationally renowned artist Nils Udo are part of this project.
On Albarella Island, nature is our passion. We have been carrying out work for the project “Immersed in nature” created by the Coloco Atelier in Paris in different stages, since 2018, to improve our environment and man’s relationship with it.
Not only do we take care of the splendid unspoiled territory in which we find ourselves, always planting new species and promoting actions for the protection and respect of the environment. Not only have we created an eco-sustainable playground, to teach even the little ones that having fun while respecting nature is possible. But we also use the language of art, especially that of “nature art” installations, to invite all guests to reflect on the importance and fragility of our ecosystem and on what can be done to keep biodiversity alive.
On Albarella Island there are three art installations immersed in nature which fit perfectly into the surrounding environment:
The Big Ear
A work created by Officinadidue, by the artists Vera Bonaventura and Roberto Mainardi, experts in Land Art, and with many years of experience in the Arte Sella circuit.
A vortex forms in the Palancana lake, bringing the sounds of the marine universe to the surface: a way to celebrate this fragile underwater world, so important for our existence.
Waiting
Work created by Officinadidue, by the artists Vera Bonaventura and Roberto Mainardi, experts in Land Art, and with many years of experience in the Arte Sella circuit .
On a large hospital bed lies a large cork oak tree, torn down by the 2017 Downburst, waiting for saplings to grow from the seeds planted all around.
WATER PRODUCTION AND RECYCLING
The supply of drinking water on the Island comes from the withdrawal of water from the Adige river and the wastewater is reused for irrigation. The water that is purified in the Island’s power plant is distributed to the relevant consumers through private underground pipes, which have been gradually replaced to eliminate losses and waste. The wastewater is treated in an ultra-modern membrane purifier and is then used to irrigate the golf course and green areas in order to reduce consumption. It is therefore possible to recycle the water 100%.
ZERO CARBON EMISSION – ZERO EMISSIONS
Albarella Island is taking a path to become the first Island in Italy which, despite having a strong economic activity, is able to guarantee a zero impact on CO2 emissions. The project called “Albarella Futuro – Zero Carbon Emission” was developed by Padua University in collaboration with national and international experts in ecology, economics, biodiversity and environmental management. The team has already started collecting data on energy consumption and the Island’s biodiversity (plants, animals, bacteria and fungi). These and numerous other variables will be included in a mathematical model developed for the Island, from which a set of actions will be planned to reduce CO2 emissions without penalizing human activities and thus achieving a zero balance between created and consumed carbon.
SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY
On the Island the use of bicycles and electric golf cars are encouraged rather than the use of the car, whose access is limited to the journey between the entrance and accommodation parking. Numerous cycling activities are also promoted to discover the Po Delta without impacting the environment. Some info? 20,000 bicycles are rented every year and the Island is surrounded by an exclusive cycle and pedestrian ring road 10 kilometres long.
