Ravenna

Ravenna
Ravenna is one and a half hours drive from Albarella. You can get to Ravenna driving on the State Road Romea to wards the south. Ravenna means art, history and culture. It has ancient origins and it can boast a glorious past. It was appointed capital three times: capital of the Western Roman Empire, capital of the Empire under the reign of Teodorico, king of the Goths and the capital of the Byzantine Empire in Europe.

In the Basilicas and baptisteries in town you can see the richest group of mosaics in the entire world, dating back to the V th and VI th centuries . Eight monuments in Ravenna have been included in the World Heritage List by Unesco. The magnificent mosaics in Ravenna are traces of the ancient Roman history.

The atmosphere in the Galla Placidia Mausoleum is almost magic: when entering the small building with a Greek cross plan you’ll be surprised to notice that daylight is replaced by the nightlight reproduced on the mosaic ceiling covered in stars.
