For those people keen on Bird-watching the Oasis Cà Mello in Porto Tolle is definitely something they can’t miss: around 40 hectares of fascinating wet areas where you can see an untouched ecosystem. For the ornithology fans the park has developed several tracks with lots of look- out posts.
There is not much you need to do bird-watching: binoculars and time. On a surface of over 66 thousand hectares you can “catch with your eyes” several species of birds nesting or wintering in the area. Over three hundred species have been registered.
On the Island of Albarella and in its inner valleys Vallesina and Fiordi, you can see tufted ducks or white headed ducks, spotted here for the first time in 2004. Following the route between the Rosolina valleys and Porto Viro, you can see grey and red herons, night herons and duck-hawks. Continuing on the path to Porto Caleri, there is a long road shaded by giant holm-oaks leading you to the Botanic Coast Garden of Veneto in Porto Caleri. Sardinian warblers, cirl buntings, nightingales and succhiacapra are to be found there.
This botanic garden gives you the chance of experiencing different eco-systems: Mediterranean maquis vegetation is lush. Its underwood is rich in orchids and among its fauna the sweet water turtles are worth a look.
Continuing towards Porto Caleri you will discover the “Via delle Valli”, where in spring and summer you might meet valpoche, avocets, stilt birds , redshanks, common and little terns. This is also the best place to meet red flamingos, which have been a popular presence lately in this area included in the territories of Valle Pozzatini and Valle Sagreda. Flocks of Flamingoes are to be spotted among the typical big farm houses with dice-shaped chimneys.
