The analysis for the ambitious ALBARELLA PROJECT was given in 1962 to the company ALIDECO S.A. (Albarella Island Development Company) located in Chiasso. The actual project got started in 1966. Alideco figured out a very special juridical and financial approach for the island. That approach foresaw the creation of 2,000 ALBARELLA UNITS which were to be sold to a group of selected businessmen and managers from all over Europe.
The signers of these 2,000 units make up an international Club of a certain level: THE ALBARELLA CLUB. Anyone buying an Albarella unit automatically becomes a member of the club.
ALBARELLA PROJECT is composed of four subsequent steps.
The first step includes the creation of the infrastructures, buildings and installations needed to grant the regular activities of the holiday resort for the first 500 club members.
The second step includes the development of an area needed to host the next 500 club members. The completion of the works leading to a total of 2,000 units is what the third and the fourth steps include.
All the developments were carefully checked upon by the company bodies and by some important banking groups, which had joined the club as full members by that time (Swiss Credit, Banca Commerciale Italiana, Deutsche Bank etc). In 1969 we assisted the completion of the first and most demanding works: the embankment all around the perimeter of the island, re-arrangement of the berths on the northern part of the island, crowning of the golf area, sport and sea facilities, new berth on the southern part of the island, paving of the main street, Capo Nord hotel, water tower, renovation works in Cà Tiepolo, Palancana.
In 1971 1,000 additional units were added and a year later some additional 1,000 units. At the same time all the tourist facilities were being taken care of. In 1972 the island was ready.
